Simple Present Rules for Third Person - Workforce & Business Sentences



Rule 1: Add "-s" for most verbs
to check - checks / to sign - signs

Examples: 
He checks his email every morning.
She signs the contract before working.

Rule 2: Add "-es" for verbs ending in -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -zz
to finish - finishes / to dress - dresses

Examples: 
He finishes his reports on time. /
She dresses professionally for her job interview.

Rule 3: Add "-s" for silent "-e" endings, pronounced with an extra syllable 
To close - closes
Examples: 
The cashier closes the bill transaction when the family finishes eating.

Rule 4: Add "-es" for verbs ending in -o
to do - does

Examples: 
The assistant does excellent work for the company.

Rule 5: Add "-s" for verbs ending in vowel + "y" (buys, enjoys, pays, stays)
To buy - buys

Examples: 
The restaurant owner buys fresh avocados directly from local farmers.

Rule 6 (consonant + y → -ies):
to reply - replies / to apply - applies

Examples: 
She replies quickly to client messages. / He applies for a new job online.


Rule 7 (Irregular):
to have - has

Examples: The new manager has a meeting at 9:00 AM.
